Assignment:
You are to write a short, historical analysis of a short story or of three poems by the same author. The idea is for you to provide an interpretation or explanation of theme, setting, character or so on, looking at the work from the context of its time. You may connect the life of the author to the work if you wish to do. Outside sources are may be used for this assignment, but is not required...
The paper's length should be between 500 – 750 words or so. This would be 2 ½ to 4 pages typed in 12 point Times New Roman font. Set the margins at one inch, top & bottom, left & right.
The writers and poets must have written between 1860 and the Present. Also, they must be citizens or residents of the United States or its territories (including such territories as Native Hawaii, Alaska, Native America, Guam, or Puerto Rico). This includes authors/poets writing in their native languages (such as French and Spanish during the 1800’s or Italian and Yiddish in the 1900’s) whose works are available in English translation.
Immigrant writers, such as Catherine Lim (Singapore), are to be considered resident writers whose works can be included. Exiles, such as Chinua Achebe, are not to be considered resident authors.
Writers who are exceptions to these would be Canadian or Mexican writers/poets, using English, who publish extensively in the United States. Pauline Johnson (Native American [Canadian]) is such an example; most of her works were published in Mother’s Magazine in Elgin, IL.
The due date is March 17, 2016.
