Student Writing Assignments

                                  Short Paper Assignment No. 1

                                                                                                                        Lit. 214
                                                                                  Professor Glenn Turner
                                                                                  Elgin Community College

You are to write a short, personal analysis of a short story or of three poems by the same author. Non-fiction and mythology may be used.  Please contact Prof. Turner for details.  The idea is for you to provide a personal interpretation or explanation of theme, setting, character or so on.  Outside sources are unnecessary for this assignment.

The paper's length should be between 500 – 750 words or so.  This would be 2 ½ to 4 pages typed in 12-point Times New Roman font.

There is no limit to geography.  All people living and writing in the present 50 states can be covered (see below for time period).  This includes those that were part of New France, New Spain, Mexico, Monarchy of Hawaii, and all Native American peoples.  For the purposes of this assignment, European explorers such as Casa De Vaca, John Smith, and La Salle may be used.

The writers and poets must have written from the Beginnings to 1870.  Also, they must be citizens or residents of the United States or its territories.  Writers who are exceptions to these would be Canadian or Mexican writers/poets who publish extensively, using English, in the United States.  Pauline Johnson (Native American [Canadian]) is such an example.

The due date is Sept. 29, 2015
